Govind Guru Tribal University was established by the Government of Rajasthan under the Rajiv Gandhi Tribal University Act, 2012. In 2016, it was renamed under the Rajiv Gandhi Tribal University, Udaipur Act, 2016 and the headquarters were relocated to Banswara.
The campus was housed in a rented building called “Janjati Bhavan” in the Banswara Collectorate Campus following the change of headquarters. The main office of the university is currently situated on Village Badavi Mahidem Road in Banswara.

Additionally, it seeks to educate the next generation of prospective leaders in the fields of knowledge creation, vocational skill enhancement, and proper attitude development in preparation for the reconstruction of society around the deeply held principles of functional democracy. - Upon selection, individuals would be contacted for an interview based on their national level entrance scores.
- Candidates without national level admission scores may take the GGTU-conducted Research Eligibility Test, or RET.
